Multiple improvements and exciting partnership
Many manufacturers in the metalworking industry know the frustration when a tool is not located where it should be, not ordered in on time - or an unnecessarily large range of cutting tools and other consumables has built up over time. These kinds of daily challenges slow down the process and cost unnecessary resources that could have been used much more optimally.
Sulzer, headquartered in Winterthur, Switzerland, is the global leader in critical solutions for core infrastructure and essential industries, with impressing manufacturing sites in many different countries around the world. Sulzer France in Saint Quentin are specializing in pumps industries. Like many other Sulzer were familiar with time consuming tool management issues and wanted to improve their efficiency and optimise internal processes.
The circumstances led to an exciting partnership with Kyocera Unimerco and the collaboration has already resulted in multiple improvements in its first phases.
"Thanks to automated Tool Management administrative tasks were cut down by 80%, freeing valuable time for other priorities."
Akim Guerda, Engineer Applicant at Sulzer
Challenges before the Tool Management Solution
Before implementing the Tool Management Solution, keeping track of tools was a challenge. Akim Guerda, Engineer Applicant at Sulzer explains: “Before, managing tools took around 60 hours per months – including stock analysis, ordering, purchasing, searching for tools, and administrative tasks. But thanks to automated Tool Management Solutions, these tasks were cut down by 80%, freeing up valuable time for other priorities.”
Improvements after implementing the Tool Management Solution
With the new Tool Management Solution in place, Sulzer quickly saw significant improvements. One of the biggest benefits was an 80% reduction in manual work related to inventory management, leading to lower HR costs and better expense control – no more overstock or unexpected shortages.
Julien Moulay, Chief Operating Team at Sulzer elaborates: “It’s a great tool, because as soon as we have the reference in hand, we can find it very quickly, and we don’t have to search through drawers like we did before. In stock, there are fewer and fewer shortages, almost no shortages at all…”

Strengthened relationship between partners
Sulzer placed their trust in Kyocera Unimerco, explained the challenges they were facing, and shared the different solutions, that they were aiming for. The introduction between the two was made possible thanks to Langlet (Groupe Dorise), whose role as a trusted distributor helped initiate the collaboration. Since Sulzer and Kyocera Unimerco worked very well together throughout the process, all three companies can now say, as reaching the end, that this has been a truly great collaboration with long term results and benefits.
